QSG Monthly Quran Seminar: Translations of the Qur'an (1649-2017)

Quran Study Group presents its second Monthly Indepth Qur’an Seminar for 2017:”Translations of the Qur'an (1649-2017)".  Portions of the Qur’an were translated into other languages during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad (ï·º) and yet for centuries Muslim scholars were reluctant to ‘translate’ the Qur’an.  Masses did not have direct access to the Quran’s message until the pioneering efforts of Shah Waliullah and his family in the 18th century.  The Qur’an was first translated into Bengali by a Hindu pundit In 1886 and although English translations of the Qur’an were available since 1649, Muslims only began to translate it into English from 1905 onwards.  When Marmaduke Picthall went to Al-Azhar to get his new Qur’an translation in 1930 to be certified, the Ulama were up in arms against any attempts to translate the Qur’an.  Why did Yusuf Ali produce his famous translate only 4 years after Pickthall?  With the appearance of the Saheeh International translation, should the ‘The Noble Quran’ by Khan & Hilaali be withdrawn from the market?  What are the differences between the various Qur’an translations and which is the ‘best’ translation?  We will answer these and other relevant questions in this unique seminar based on the Tutor’s Master’s research on the topic.

Extensive Course Notes will be provided to all attendees.
