ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

The ‘Bioethics and Islam Masterclasses’ is a one-year interdisciplinary programme of education and engagement consisting of six full-day classes, between April 2017-February 2018. The masterclasses will explore faith-based ethical perspectives on how to think about and navigate biomedical advances and their practical, moral and spiritual implications.

WHO IS THIS PROGRAMME FOR?

This programme will be delivered by a team of experts and aims to draw together participants from the healthcare profession, scholars, chaplains, Imams, academics, policy specialists, students, and anyone with an interest in exploring the interaction of Islam with the themes of bioethics.

THEMES:

This programme will provide a space for us to build a community of individuals who can learn from each other, and work together to discuss and research emerging questions related to bioethics and Islam. We will provide reading lists and resources for participants, and include interactive sessions in the programme.

The Masterclasses programme is as follows:

Class 1: Islamic ethics and law: sources, principles, methodologies, and their application to the field of bioethics

Class 2: Beginning of life and ensoulment: abortion, assisted reproductive technologies, and the status of the embryo

Class 3: The limits of science and playing God: genetics and enhancement

Class 4: Defining health and illness in Islam and medicine: understanding mental health and well-being

Class 5: Defining death and the process of dying: end of life and organ donation

Class 6: Competing interests when caring for the patient: values, policy and practice

The course will survey definitions, explanations, and an analysis of the constituents of ethical reasoning, distinct to the law, as formulated and practiced in the Islamic tradition. It will also cover an overview of the historical developments and future challenges for themes related to Islam and bioethics, and the role of different stakeholders in the field as they navigate knowledge, language and authority in everyday bioethical dilemmas.

Programme partnersCentre of Islamic Studies, University of Cambridge, and the Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK, Cardiff University. We are working to secure RCGP accreditation for the programme for healthcare professionals. The Muslim Spiritual care provision is endorsing this programme as part of their healthcare chaplaincy training.
